The last thing this family did before evacuating was to take a photo of their home; they didn’t know what they would find when it was safe to return.
After driving miles through traffic-clogged streets, they tracked the wrath of Hurricane Ian online and knew it had roared through their neighborhood.
Days later, with the image of their family home firmly in their mind, they started the return to their home, traveling down roads strewn with downed trees, smashed vehicles, and parts of torn homes. As they crept through the wreckage their spirits dropped lower and lower as they dreaded what they would find on their own street.
Their worst fears were realized as they pulled in front of their home: trees down everywhere, the front and back doors pushed open by the force of the flood that washed out all of their furniture, their food, their vehicles.
No electricity meant no air conditioning to relieve the awful humid heat, no refrigerator, and no lights. The cellular towers were down and communication was difficult and unreliable. The adults in the family tried to find out if their paychecks were deposited, if they had jobs to return to, and how to get food and water for the family.
That night, in the dark and sweltering house, the head of the family rationed the batteries as they maintained a vigil, protecting all they had left in the world and wondering where they could turn for help.
Thanks to you, this family and others like them, had a place to call. They called Binc.
You changed their worry and stress to hope. You helped this family begin to rebuild their life.
