You Are Helping Stores Recover From Flooding

Because you stand with Binc, Binc stands ready to help the employees and owners of bookstores and comic shops during and after extreme weather disasters.

When the East Coast was hit with a ‘once in a 1,000 years flood’ this month booksellers in Vermont scrambled to get their inventory to safety before evacuating as the flood waters engulfed their community.

As they locked their store doors before hurrying to secure their homes from the same ravaging waters, they didn’t know what they’d find when the waters receded. That same day Binc sent an email to the bookstore and comic shop owners within the flood area, letting them know how to contact Binc for disaster assistance should it be necessary.

The water is receding and internet is once more available within the flooded areas. Booksellers are pumping up to 8 feet of water from basements; removing the mud, snakes, oil, sewage, and chemicals the water left behind; sorting through boxes and cases of sodden books; and racing against mold as they run huge fans to dry the floors and walls.

Thanks to you, the store owners know that Binc can help replace essentials like fixtures and check out equipment not covered by insurance. Several store owners have already begun working with Binc’s program manager to complete a store disaster financial request.

Severe weather emergencies are occurring more frequently and recovering from extreme weather disasters takes time. Requests for financial assistance can continue for several weeks as employees work through the damage to their homes and stores.

The assistance you make possible brings them hope. This thank you from a store owner impacted by a previous flood says it best:

“Our bookstore sustained serious water damage due to an unprecedented storm. Binc’s support came at a critical time for us; we were able to complete needed repairs faster so we could reopen as quickly as possible. Your mission to strengthen the bookselling retail community is an important one and we are grateful to be a recipient of your vision and generosity.”
