Job Purpose: The Development Manager designs and executes fundraising campaigns while building meaningful relationships with annual donors ($250-$1,000+) and strategic partners in the book and comic retail community. We’re looking for someone who loves connecting with people, thinks strategically about fundraising, and is passionate about supporting independent booksellers and comic retailers.

The Role
The Development Manager builds and stewards relationships with Binc’s annual donors—the foundation of our sustainable funding. You’ll create and execute two multi-channel campaigns per year, create and execute special campaigns, manage donor engagement across giving levels ($250-$1,000+), and identify partnership opportunities with bookstores, authors, and brands. This role requires someone who loves connecting with people, thinks strategically about fundraising, and is genuinely passionate about supporting the book and comic retail community.
Reports to: Development Director
Key Responsibilities
Annual Fund Strategy & Communications
- Design and execute in conjunction with other team members and resources a comprehensive annual giving program to engage donors giving $250-$1,000+, with clear pathways for growth toward major giving.
- Set and achieve ambitious annual revenue goals, tracking donor acquisition, retention, and upgrade rates.
- Partner with the team to plan and execute annual giving (spring and year-end) campaigns across email, web, direct mail, and social media channels.
- Collaborate with communications and programs to craft donor-centered storytelling that reflects Binc’s mission and impact.
- Work with the Development Coordinator to track and report on campaign performance, renewal rates, and donor engagement metrics, using data to inform strategy.
- Expand revenue opportunities through partnerships with bookstores, authors, publishers, and book/comic readers.
- Develop and manage cause-marketing partnerships with aligned brands and companies.
Donor Engagement & Pipeline Development
- Identify, research, and cultivate new donor prospects to expand annual giving.
- Make outbound calls to mid-level prospects to discover giving interests and cultivation opportunities.
- Represent Binc at tradeshows and conferences to engage and cultivate new donors.
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure thoughtful handoffs and pipeline transitions between giving levels.
- Build and maintain a meaningful stewardship program with personal, regular communication through segmented outreach, timely acknowledgments, and donor recognition.
- In collaboration with the Development Director, engage donors throughout the year through events, mailings, and personal outreach.
Operations & Administration
- Develop and maintain expert-level proficiency with Salesforce to ensure accurate documentation of donor records, financial data, and contact information.
- Prepare monthly reports and analysis to track progress toward goals.
- Build relationships across the organization to understand and effectively communicate funding priorities.
- Other fundraising and administrative tasks as needed.
Qualifications
Required
- 4+ years of frontline fundraising experience with annual giving campaigns and donor cultivation.
- Proven track record in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual gifts, including experience managing donor pipelines and personal portfolios.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with a strong commitment to donor stewardship and service.
- Comfort with data analysis and using data to inform fundraising strategy.
- Proficiency with CRM systems (Salesforce preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Collaborative spirit with a passion for teamwork, creative problem-solving, and mission-driven work.
- High level of professionalism and discretion in handling sensitive donor information.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively, respectfully, and inclusively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability and commitment to nationwide travel and work occasional evenings and weekends for donor cultivation and events.
- This position requires prolonged periods of sitting and computer use, the ability to lift up to 25 lbs for tradeshow set up and breakdown, and occasional travel, including air travel.
Strongly Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and on-the-job experience.
- CFRE certification.
- Experience in nonprofit human services, education, or cultural sector.
- Experience managing donor circles or giving societies.
- Experience with social media fundraising and emerging technology platforms.
- Passion for books, comics, and independent bookstores. Experience within book or publishing industry a bonus.

Compensation & Benefits
Salary Range: $58,000 – $68,000 commensurate with experience

- This is a salaried/exempt position.
Location & How to Apply
Location: Remote with occasional travel for conferences and events.
This is a remote position with a strong preference for candidates based in IL, MI, NY, KY, ME, WY, or CA. The role requires availability during core business hours of 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Eastern Time. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for events and conferences.
