Ann Arbor—The Book Industry Charitable Foundation, in collaboration with Sourcebooks and the Denver Publishing Institute at the University of Denver, announced on January 1st that applications are open to apply for a scholarship to attend the Denver Publishing Institute. This opportunity is open to current booksellers interested in learning about the publishing side of the industry. Applications for the scholarship – worth up to $7000 – to attend the Denver Publishing Institute in Denver, CO will be accepted through February 26th, 2020. The scholarship includes tuition, room and board, and up to $2000 to cover travel and lost wages.
The Denver Publishing Institute (DPI) is a 4-week-long summer program (July 12 – August 7, 2020) at the University of Denver. DPI is taught by industry professionals who work for trade, university, textbook, and independent publishers throughout the country. Recent graduates have gone on to work at Sourcebooks, Bank Square Books, Harper Collins, Penguin Group, Oxford University Press, Chicago Review Press, Pearson, and McGraw-Hill. Course and lecture topics include book marketing, manuscript editing, copyediting and proofreading, digital marketing strategies, the role of the bookstore, and many publishing specific courses.
Valerie Pierce, Director of Marketing, Retail & Creative Services at Sourcebooks said, “It is such a joy to be working with our good friends at Binc on a joint scholarship that supports a program that is absolutely vital to our publishing community. DPI helps educate the next generation of our industry, and several former students are now part of the Sourcebooks family. Todd Stocke, our senior v-p of editorial, attends each year and speaks to students, and he can’t wait to engage with future publishing professionals and future booksellers this year!”
Kate Kenney from Bank Square Books won the scholarship last year. She told Binc, “I’m so grateful . . . to attend the Denver Publishing Institute. Having been a bookseller at independent bookstores across the country, it was a dream come true to be able to learn more about the book industry with DPI’s prestigious program.”
Jill Smith, director of the Denver Publishing Institute said, “We are delighted to be able to join Binc and Sourcebooks to support another bookseller’s attendance at the 2020 Denver Publishing Institute. Booksellers are vitally important to the publishing community because of their direct relationships with readers. Our goal is to help them grow in their careers, whether they continue to grow their roles in retail or move into different positions within book publishing.”
The application process – which will go through DPI’s admission application – is open to booksellers who are currently employed (full- or part-time) at a brick and mortar bookstore, with a tenure of at least 90 days, and are employed by the bookstore at the time of the program.
